fundraising blitz in california but successful. he is expected to take home about 2 million extra to his campaign. he was cheered on by crowds at sfo yesterday. at his events he told bay area supporters to get quote almost obsessive about his re- election. he attended to fundraisers, a private $20,000 a plate dinner for 100 guests and a concert for 6,000 more at bill graham auditorium. the president asked them to help him finish what he started four years. he also roused the crowd with his own big bird jokes. >> finally someone is cracking down on big bird. . an exclusive cbs 5 surveyusa poll of adults in california shows that 48% believe romney won compared with 34% for president obama. 18% felt there was no clear winner. last night's forum in colorado focused mainly on the economy and other domestic issues. that debate took place at the university of denver, colorado being a big swing state in this election, as well. the focus of the debate was the economy. but big bird somehow got into the dialogue there. and, of course, as we mentioned, there were some polls that showed that romney came out ahead of the president on that first debate. bigad shaban joins us live from denver with some highlights from last night. the past couple of days and moved through southern california finally going to kick eastward as it moves out. high pressure is coming in, in time for the weekend so we'll see a gradual warming trend over the weekend and eventually next week maybe a little mini heat wave before we get back into talking about more rain in the bay area. temperatures outside right now under mostly cloudy skies into the 50s just about everywhere. 80s in the interior valleys today. we are struggling to get to the mid-60s in livermore. 66 in san jose. 62 in san francisco and about 60 degrees in pacifica with some partly cloudy skies there. as we look toward the next couple of days we are going to warm up saturday. sunday looks nice, 80s popping in the valleys. weak system drops in on monday that may bring clouds and hold the temperatures down but after that, we could very well see those offshore winds kicking in. if that happens, maybe temperatures back into the upper 80s, maybe low 90s as we head into thursday. 60s maybe near 70 degrees out toward the coastline. >> let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> fire

hear it last night or maybe you were outside did you see it? many people across northern california reported seeing a flash and hearing a big boom. >> cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran has more on the meteor sighting that's left some souvenirs in one east bay city. good morning, cate. >> reporter: yes, good morning, frank and michelle. this is the kind of thing that makes all of us mad that we had to go to bed so early because i definitely missed it. but i have read a couple of conflicting reports on this and i want to point out that, you know, experts here at the chabot space and science center say it's not part of the meteor shower expected over the weekend but some say it's a preview. it's not over. we have some black and white surveillance footage from san jose's lick observatory. you can see it up close and personal. that white mass slowly moving across the sky. now an astronomy instructor here at the chabot space and science center says a meteor probably hit the earth right around martinez hills about the size of a car before it broke up into a few pieces. we have a picture from a

is actually a littler larger than a quarter. that is very, very impressive for california to see that kind of hail. nonetheless a sign of thunderstorms from that hail and we may see a few more thunderstorms pop up today. fairly quiet reports of light sprinkles and scattered showers and you can see some of that activity off the coast wrapping around that area of low pressure that's been slowly spinning to southern california. we may see more of that wrap around today and again that target will be in the south bay could see some thunderstorms popping up this afternoon. temperatures now mainly in the 40s. by the afternoon going to keep things cool only in the 60s and low 70s. there is a major warmup. we'll have that coming up. now let's check traffic with elizabeth. >> let's talk oakland. the as playing tonight 6:37 first pitch so you could see extra traffic tie-ups for the evening commute so want to let you know that. but in the meantime, 880 not too bad even though we again have been talking to caltrans this morning. they still have that roadwork in lanes on northbound 880 between fruitvale

to determine what species of shark killed him. his death is the 13th fatal shark attack in california since 1950. >> i think it's pretty well known locally like you said that there are sharks and we have had shark sightings up and down the santa barbara coastline pretty frequently recently. >> shark attacks actually declined in the u.s. last year. there are only an average of 16 shark attacks a year nationwide. and few are fatal. >>> 5:08 now on a wednesday. a man at a social service center in east oakland shot video when he saw a confrontation. a pregnant woman got into a verbal altercation with employees yesterday morning. she refused to go when she was asked to leave. that's when her boyfriend stepped in. the witnesses say deputies hit him after they got him in the handcuffs. >> he was handcuffed already on the floor and it was a lot of witnesses, he was handcuffed, and they start kneeing him again and punching him on his head. >> you're seeing only a small snapshot. >> the punch is within policy. >> alameda county sheriff's department says it will investigate only if the someone files a

rushing up onshore. we do know at this point that pg&e from california is sending about 150 crewmembers in the next couple of days to help out to restore power on the east coast. >> and take a look at this picture. that is the boardwalk in atlantic city and it is nearly gone, folks. i believe 80 pieces of that boardwalk have been sent into the city of atlantic city or washed away in the atlantic. atlantic city is hurting in a big way. it's going to take months if not a good year in get that back and up. >> president barack obama declared a major disaster for new york city and long island. super storm sandy is marching slowly inland after leaving at least 17 people dead in its march up the east coast. an estimated 7.4 million homes and businesses are currently without power across 16 states and washington, d.c. and again, in the hard hit big apple the new york stock exchange nasdaq and broadway theaters will be closed for a second straight day and as we said, the president declared a major disaster. pg&e is sending some crewmembers from california, 150, to be exact, to help restore power

to 101 north. so the california highway patrol is urging drivers to reduce speed below the posted limit throughout the marin area because of flooded freeway sections. now, this is the first significant rainfall of the season and it is causing some major problems throughout the bay area. here are some other areas drivers should be aware of. there is flooding in larkspur on 101 northbound, sir francis drake. also in oakland, flooding on 880 south at 980 west and standing water on 580 at highway 24. expect delays there. the right lane and shoulder are affected. also, in calistoga avoid the area on highway 29 before tubbs lane. the lanes are blocked. some of the biggest problems in antioch. there is a sig alert on highway 4 at hillcrest because of flooding. this is the first rain we're seeing in quite a while so drivers take it easy out there. you're going to want to maintain minor pressure on your brakes. you're going to want to drive slower than usual. make sure you're not skidding or hydroplaning. best advice, go slow. if you have been waiting to replace your worn tires now is the time.
